Vanilla Panna Cotta – A Classic Italian Dessert

Vanilla Panna Cotta, which means “cooked cream” in Italian, is one of the simplest yet most elegant desserts you can serve. Silky-smooth, creamy, and lightly flavored with vanilla, this chilled dessert feels luxurious while requiring just a few ingredients. Traditionally served with fresh berries, fruit compote, or a drizzle of caramel, panna cotta is versatile and can be made ahead of time—making it a favorite for dinner parties and special occasions.

Its delicate texture and subtle sweetness allow the rich flavor of real vanilla to shine through. Using high-quality vanilla beans, paste, or extract transforms this simple recipe into a gourmet treat.

Vanilla Panna Cotta Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 2 cups (500 ml) heavy cream
  • 1 cup (250 ml) whole milk
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped)
  • 2 ½ teaspoons powdered gelatin (1 packet)
  • 3 tablespoons cold water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the gelatin – In a small bowl, sprinkle gelatin over cold water and let it bloom (soften) for about 5 minutes.
  2. Heat the cream mixture – In a saucepan, combine cream, milk, and sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is hot but not boiling.
  3. Add vanilla – Stir in vanilla extract (or scraped vanilla bean seeds and pod). Remove from heat.
  4. Incorporate gelatin – Remove the vanilla pod (if used). Add the bloomed gelatin to the warm cream mixture and whisk until completely dissolved.
  5. Pour into molds – Divide the mixture into ramekins or serving glasses. Let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or until set.
  6. Serve – To unmold, dip the ramekin bottoms briefly in hot water and invert onto a plate. Serve with fresh berries, berry coulis, caramel, or a dusting of cocoa.

Tips for the Perfect Panna Cotta

  • Texture: The perfect panna cotta should be just set—soft enough to wobble but firm enough to hold its shape.
  • Vanilla choice: Real vanilla beans or high-quality vanilla paste will give the dessert a deeper, more aromatic flavor than extract.
  • Make-ahead: Panna cotta can be prepared a day in advance, making it a stress-free dessert for gatherings.

✨ Why you’ll love it:
This Vanilla Panna Cotta is creamy, elegant, and surprisingly easy to make. With only a handful of ingredients, you can create a show-stopping dessert that looks and tastes like it came straight from an Italian restaurant.
